Hear our performance of Extended Technique

Read the Poem while listening

Don is playing a "daf", a frame drum we brought home from a visit to Iran a few years ago. The underside has hundreds of small ringlike jingles. Kath is using a Celtic frame drum, a large bodhran. We also used paintbrushes to sound the instruments, as an extended technique, and lotus pods to make soft rattling sounds. The initial "roar" in the piece was made by a "spring drum", a tubular shaped drum with a long spring dangling that is shaken for a "stormy" effect.

We also performed the poem Duo which included the extended technique of cracking an egg into a singing bowl, and then striking the bowl, producing a long ringing finale to the poem.

Thanks to poet Pauli Dutton and her husband poet Richard Dutton for taking these great photos during our performance. The poems were inspired by a performance at last week's Thursday Night Poetry concert by professional percussionist duo Lynn Vartan, of Southern California's Southwest Chamber Music and Miguel Gonzalez of Mexico City's Tambuco Ensemble (more photos to come)
